Meal Trolley Washer for Hospital Catering

Insulated patient-meal delivery trolleys returning from the wards. Sanitize at 82°C with Joint Commission-compliant cycle logging.

Scenario summary

A 450-bed acute-care hospital operates 18 insulated meal-delivery trolleys that cycle between the central kitchen and the ward-floor distribution points. Each trolley returns three times a day after breakfast, lunch, and dinner — 54 trolley wash cycles per day, or about 20,000 wash events per year. Manual washing of an insulated trolley (interior + exterior + wheels + tray rails) takes 11-14 minutes per trolley. A PTW-1900 handles the same cycle in 6 minutes with one operator monitoring — and produces the audit log the hospital needs.

Why a roll-in trolley washer beats manual washing

Hospital meal trolleys are bulky: typically 1,000 × 500 mm footprint, 1,400 mm tall, with built-in heating or refrigeration compartments. Three operational pain points come up in every hospital:

  1. Manual washing leaves dead zones — wheel housings, the inner channels of the tray rails, the gaskets around heated compartments. A 2023 study by NHS England found that 23% of in-hospital outbreak investigations traced contamination to meal-cart surfaces inadequately cleaned by manual methods.
  2. The Joint Commission / TJC audit demands evidence — the auditor wants to see a documented cycle record proving each trolley achieved sanitization. Manual washing offers no audit trail. The PTW-1900 PLC logs every cycle with timestamp + temperatures + dwell time at ≥82°C, exportable as CSV.
  3. Labour cost is real — 18 trolleys × 3 cycles/day × 12 minutes manual = 10.8 operator-hours/day. At fully-loaded USD 22/hour, that’s USD 86,500/year just to wash trolleys. A PTW-1900 reduces this to 1 operator × 3 hours/day = USD 24,000/year.
  • Electric 70 kW version — hospital electrical infrastructure (480V North America, 400V EU) typically reliable; steam often dedicated to autoclave + laundry
  • Stored “Segregation” PLC profile — 90-second 85°C clean-water rinse between dietary cohorts (immunocompromised oncology, neutropenic precautions). Required for JCI-accredited facilities
  • Barcode scanner integration — scan trolley ID before loading; PLC logs trolley + cycle + temps. Becomes audit deliverable
  • SUS304 chamber standard; SUS316 upgrade for trolleys with stainless-steel-clad heater inserts (extends chamber life from 12 to 15 years given hospital corrosion exposure)
  • Standard 1.5 m loading ramp — hospital basements rarely permit pit excavation

ROI for a 450-bed hospital

  • Labour displaced: 9 operator-hours/day × USD 22 × 365 = USD 72,270/year
  • Water saved: ~120 m³/year (recirculated wash tank vs throwaway manual) × USD 4.50 = USD 540/year
  • Chemical sanitizer eliminated: quat-sanitizer + buckets replaced by 82°C thermal = USD 3,400/year
  • Audit defensibility: TJC audit prep hours reduced from ~80 hours/quarter to ~8 hours (documented cycle log replaces manual records) = USD 8,000/year in management time
  • All-in capital: USD 60,000-70,000 landed

Payback: ~10-12 months pure, or 14-18 months with realistic ramp-up.

Audit defensibility — what the cycle log produces

Every cycle the PLC writes a record containing: timestamp, trolley ID (if scanned), operator ID (if PIN-entered), cycle profile (Standard / Heavy / Sani-only), wash tank temperature curve, final-rinse temperature curve, dwell time at ≥82°C. Exportable as CSV or pushed via Modbus / OPC-UA into the hospital’s CMMS.

When the Joint Commission EC surveyor asks “show me the sanitization records for cart #14 during the week of August 12,” the hospital pulls the records in 30 seconds.
